As with many thing out there, creativity comes from necessity and both military and criminal subcultures are no exception. While garrotes were first used in Spain for executions, they were later used for sentry removal by many military special operations groups and this modern version has some modern additional uses as well

The coin garotte specifically was a tool used by Les Apaches - a criminal organization made famous during the Belle Époque in France for their brutal tactics. Some of these included use of a garrote in execution of the coup du Père François, which later was combined with some other techniques to influence other groups including OSS operatives.

During his last visit to Denver, Ed Calderon of Ed’s Manifesto showed me how to make a modern update of a historical classic. This version uses early US Mint Buffalo Nickels with a radiused center hole, epoxied end knots, 3 MM braided Technora cord rated to 950 lbs for maximum durability and effectiveness and can even be used as a friction saw to cut through zip ties or similar materials. Length is approximately 26”, but can be easily adjusted by the user. One coin on each set is stamped with a K and each set comes with a sticker and in a black Kopis tin that can be reused to carry small survival kits and similar.
